The 1935 Nuremberg laws prohibited marriage between Jews and "Aryans". Although the statute did not dissolve existing marriages, mixed couples came under pressure to divorce, and as soon as they filed, the divorce was granted. For those who remained married, a distinction was made between "privileged" and "non-privileged" marriages. Ordinary or non-privileged marriages were those with no offspring or whose children belonged to the Jewish community. Privileged marriages were those involving a German husband and a Jewish wife, even if the couple had no children and those mixed marriages where the children were Christian. Generally, Jewish spouses in mixed marriages were protected from deportation until 1944. Those in non-privileged marriages had to wear the yellow star and abide by the other anti-Jewish restrictions.
